Taxonomy
Description
Acanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae), the bean beetle, is a seed-feeding species whose larvae develop within the seeds of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and related legumes. It is widespread in agricultural systems and is an important post-harvest pest, particularly because adults can emerge from stored beans and reproduce over successive generations. Females oviposit on the surface of bean seeds, and larvae burrow into the seed shortly after hatching, where they complete development while feeding on the seed’s nutritional reserves. The species is consequently well suited to laboratory experimental evolution, with relatively short generation times and substantial reproductive output.
A. obtectus also exhibits considerable genetic and phenotypic variation in life-history traits, including development, reproductive timing, fecundity, longevity, and body size. Experimental-evolution studies have demonstrated that these traits can respond rapidly to artificial selection, providing evidence for substantial standing genetic variation and evolutionary potential. In particular, selection on the timing of reproduction can produce correlated responses in longevity and other life-history traits. The species has therefore become a useful model for investigating evolutionary trade-offs, life-history evolution, sexual selection, and the genetic architecture of fitness-related traits.
